We use the packing peanuts in a very large outdoor pot,not only to
reduce the amount of potting soil needed, but also to keep the planter
weight down to a manageable limit.

How did you narrow your list down to these five? The thought of starting food storage seems daunting - there are so many companies and I do not know who is trustworthy and produces the best product, hence my question. Thanks for your help!

If you're gonna learn to cook like Granny, the *first* thing you should learn to do is how to properly bank a fire. If you've got a solid home-base, there is zero reason why you should be going through that many matches.

One key aspect to storing foods I'd like to add is ROTATION. Really we should be buying many foods that we regularly can use and so many people forget this. So quality becomes more of a priority if that is what it will take for you to eat start eating some of the foods now.

It is really the best place for dried foods too like beans, rice, wheat, etc....
We made a very unique rootcellar using an old fiberglass 29' sailboat. There are a lot of these boats out there for cheap. Saves the building costs and is water tight. Easy to control the environment also.
Thanks for your info!

Another one "You urge your spouse to make a garden with heirloom seeds because they are healthier and you won't have to spend money on seeds next year."

It's true that that there is no escaping the fact that a massive food shortage is on its way. Here in the United States we waste more food than any industrialized country in the world. This dilemna will never be corrected due to the fact that the American people are bombarded with media ads suggersting that we injest more fatty foods, such as burgers, sweets, and other junk. Food that's left over in restaurants, and homes etc. end up in the garbage. We will contunue to devour and devour until supply will not meet demand. Do your research people. You may, and I emphasize may, learn something about about your contributions to the food shortage apocylipse which indeed will surely begin in the near future. Marv Brilliant Ph.D.

I agree - health shouldn't suffer even in emergency situations. And it's in times like these that you will need all the nutrition you can get from your emergency food supply.

I am a big proponent of having a good stock of grocery store survival items. One reason is that these are most likely foods you would eat regularly. The psychological effect of the "normalcy" that familiar foods will bring during an emergency cannot be understated. In addition, it is just as likely (if not more so) that an emergency will last a couple weeks to a couple of months before heading back to normal rather than the completely catastrophic one year or longer scenario. Do you really want to be forced to open up your more expensive, 30 year shelf life food storage to get you through an emergency that will run its course in two months? Our personal supply includes 3 months of "pantry food," 3 months of 7 year shelf life freeze dried foods, and 4 months of long term 30 year shelf life #10 cans. We have decided to add a bit more and it makes sense to increase our pantry food. It's easier to share, it's foods we like, and can be purchased easily.

Another way to get fresh greens... Grow sprouts! They need only a little bit of water and can be grown without any sunlight at all. Get the right mixes and you will have many of the vitamins, minerals, and even protein that you need.

I finally found a company that offers an OPSEC way to get our food storage. A years worth of food all stacked up on a pallet and wrapped in black plastic. It's called the CUBE. You can find it at www.srmarketplace.com on the special deals page. Don't know how to cook with food storage? They have some good videos that shows you several recipes. It's easier than I thought it would be to be prepared, you just have to know where to look.

Thanks Dr.G for your site and information here> I was doing some research and found you......As an ayurvedic practitoner and nurse I use an open system and still am able to introduce herbs into the colon therapy. I easily brew Triphalo and neem tea that is used in the colema system...and I find that this is gentle on the client. In reading your comment above, SHe would have to check on state regulations but I would imagine that if she wanted to add Young Living essential oils to the therapy session that would be considered "self administration" and would absolve the practitioner of liability as long as she added them?

EcoloBlue or WaterPure International?

Apparently EcoloBlue is made in China and WaterPure International is made in the USA.

Do you own either of the two or have you tested them?

I read a lot of negative things about EcoloBlue but WaterPure Interantional has less marketing so there is not much info on it.

I understand your argument but to say that in the past we could eat with no problems is a big stretch. The problems were always there, at least now we know about it. I'm more concerned about the mercury than anything.
